2000 - The Magic Continues
by CP

This year saw just four tamil albums of Rahman. But...as known,Rahman never compromises on quality. All four of these albums were big ones...Alaipayuthey, Kandukondaen Kandukondaen, Rhythm and Thenaali.

Needless to say about a Manirathnam-Rahman combo. Alaipayuthey was just another such combination, which produced similar results. Endrendrum Punnagai, Pachchai Niramey and Snehithaney were the first to captivate audience. Endrendrum Punnagai, with its crazy beats, differed sharply from the other two, which were ultimate melodies. September Maatham by
Aasha Bhonsle, a peppy number, was also a good effort. Kaathal Sadugudu, rendered beautifully by Charan, had enjoyable music of a different kind - the sound of splashing water (Alaiye Sitralaiye) is one such notable difference.Yaaro Yaarodi had the "village" effect combined in a perfect manner with drums. Finally the original tune of Maangalyam Thanthunaanaenaa was totally revised by Rahman. Though criticised by some, it still was an original contemporary experiment by ARR.

Rajiv Menon's second venture - Kandukondaen Kandukondaen soon followed Alaipayuthey.Rahman's score for Rajiv's Minsara Kanavu won him the national award. This album had everything right for him to do it again. My personal favourite being Yenna Solla Pogirai by Shankar Mahadevan, which i would have listened to atleast a hundred times ! Every bit of this song is enjoyable...good lyrics, great singing and as expected great music. However Smiyai, a faster song, was the first
to catch people's attention. Another superhit is what people felt after hearing these two songs. They couldn't be proved wrong no matter what. Konjum Mainakkaley, a more malayali kind of song, and Engey Enathu Kavitahi were just an addition to Rahman's priceless collections.

Two big directors...now here comes the third - Vasanth. The film - Rhythm, a novel effort, had songs about different elements of nature. Rahman's music for each of them made people feel what they actually are ! Nathiye Nathiye by UnniMenon, Kaatre En Vaasal by UnniKrishnan and Galagala -vena Pozhiyum by Sadhna Sargam were the melodious numbers in the album. Galagala-vena Pozhiyum differing only in the fact that it had more stronger/tougher kinds of
interlude music. Aiyyo Pathikichu by VasundhraDas was the more western type of song in the album. Last, but not the least, my favourite Thaniye by Shankar Mahadevan. The tempo of the song changes not too fast, not too slow, but in an absolute perfect manner. There is something in this song, more than the tempo changing, that made me attracted vey very badly
to it. The perfection of using instruments at the right time maybe. In my opinion there are just no words in the English language to praise this album enough.

Finally, to Thenaali ! How better could this get? Rahman working with Universal Hero KamalHassan and K.S.Ravikumar on a project !! The Terrefic Three had created enough hype, that in the absence of Vairamuthu, Rahman had to prove himself to the world that his music was capable of dominating Vairamuthu's lyrics. Without doubt, he did ! The title song
Thenaalikku Ellam Bayam reflected Kamal's character in the film beautifully. The saavu koothu beat in one of the interludes gives a different feel to the song. Ear deafening drums and trumpets (wow!)...this was the main ingredient of Ho Jaaye. This was enough to make this song a great hit. Aalan Katti Mazhai and Swaasamey are the additions to ARR's "melody bank". So is Porkalam Engey, a song which full and full rested on the awesome tune it was set to.
